Case Study

Flexible & fit-for-purpose learning spaces delivered for Flemington School

Located in the Central Hawkes Bay Region, the isolated rural community of Flemington is host to a small school which was in need of a substantial upgrade to their learning spaces. Two of the existing classroom buildings had reached the end of their usable life and were no longer fit for purpose, requiring complete demolition and replacement. To avoid impact to staff and students, the Ministry of Education chose Portacom to deliver a modular learning block capable of being rapidly transported and assembled on site.

The school required two teaching spaces, modern bathroom facilities and a separate library area. Portacom were quick to design a solution that met these needs, and the modular nature of the process allowed the buildings to be constructed off site while a separate team prepared the site for the arrival of the modules, including demolition of the existing structures, removal and replacement of contaminated soil and construction of an engineered retaining wall to support the new building. Despite severe weather hindering this preparation work on site, construction of the modules was able to continue in the factory resulting in minimal delay to the project timeline.

The solution which Portacom delivered to site consisted of two bright, modern and functional classrooms, upgraded bathrooms and a new library area for students to enjoy. The buildings were very well received by staff and students alike, allowing teaching and learning in warm, safe classrooms that meet modern regulations. Despite being in a rural area the buildings were delivered quickly with minimal disruption to learning, and the outcome is a vastly improved environment for staff and students at Flemington School to enjoy.
