Empowering Women in Manufacturing

At Portacom, we believe in the power of diversity and the unique strengths that each team member brings to the table. Our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment is reflected in the outstanding contributions of women in our business. Today, we spotlight one of our remarkable team members who exemplifies dedication and expertise in the hire business.

Tracey's Key Role at Portacom

Tracey has been a vital part of our team at the Christchurch service centre for the last 10 years. Her role is multifaceted, involving the assessment of returned hire buildings for any damage and necessary maintenance. She ensures that these buildings are restored to a hireable state and identifying any specific maintenance r alterations required for the next hire. She works closely with tradespeople and the Production Manager to ensure that the right professionals are brought in to address these needs. Additionally, Tracey guides her team members on maintenance issues, demonstrating her leadership and mentorship skills.

A Day in Tracey's Work Life

A typical day for Tracey starts with checking her schedule to see which buildings are needed for hire. She meticulously ensures that all buildings are up to spec, cleaned, and maintained to a high standard, ready for their next use. This attention to detail guarantees that our clients receive top-quality facilities that meet their needs.

"Working here for 10 years has taught me to work smarter to get the job done," Tracey explains. Her experience has equipped her with the skills to quickly assess and address maintenance issues, ensuring smooth operations and high customer satisfaction.

Staying Ahead with Technology

Innovation is key to staying ahead in the manufacturing industry. At Portacom, we have recently integrated advanced Karcher cleaning equipment and a tablet-based auditing app into our processes. These technological advancements streamline our operations, replacing older methods with more efficient digital solutions.

"We have recently had Karcher cleaning equipment added to our inventory. The use of a Tablet and auditing app to book in and check out hire buildings. Previously this was done on paper and with a digital camera" Tracey says.

The manufacturing industry is not without its challenges. Tracey often deals with buildings that come off-hire in less-than-ideal conditions. However, through hard work and teamwork, she and her team restore these buildings to their former glory. One notable achievement involved transforming a severely vandalised toilet unit into a pristine, hireable space. "A very dirty toilet with graffiti over all walls and damages. We managed to make it look like new after hard work" she proudly shares.

Advice for Aspiring Women

For women considering a career in manufacturing, Tracey offers valuable advice: "Be confident in your skill set and good communication is a must! Happy team work attitude. Be happy – it’s contagious!"

What excites her the most about her job is the challenge of making a very dirty or damaged hire building look like it’s just come out of the factory. "The challenge of making a very dirty/damaged hire building look like it’s just come out of the factory," she shares, "Having a challenge gives the brain a work out and a sense of achievement at the end of the day."
