Case Study

Temporary classrooms keep education on track at Omakere School

Omakere school was facing a unique but serious challenge. Their existing school buildings were due to be replaced by new traditionally built structures, which, due to limited space, had to be constructed in the same location. With an extended school closure or relocation of students not an option, the only solution was a set of temporary classrooms which could be trucked into site, rapidly set up and just as easily decommissioned once no longer required. This is what Portacom were asked to deliver.

The solution provided to Omakere school needed to replicate the existing learning space including 3 classrooms, an administration building and bathroom facilities. Our team quickly designed a solution that met those requirements while also ensuring no compromise on comfort or functionality. The benefits of modular construction meant that we were able to prepare these buildings off-site while the oval was set up for the buildings’ arrival, ensuring that the site was ready to go once the trucks arrived. This also resulted in less on-site work to reduce disruption to the grounds and also less impact on the homes adjacent to the school.

The result of this work is a clean, functional and entirely temporary school that provides a seamless transition for students and teachers, allowing them continue on as usual while their upgraded school is being constructed. Despite the challenges of operating around active classrooms and sporting fields, the team effectively managed the project and allowed the school to continue operating during construction, creating a better outcome for students and staff alike.
